Volleyball comes through with solid NESCAC weekend

The women’s volleyball team traveled to Connecticut College for a NESCAC weekend this past weekend and emerged with two victories and a loss.

The team saw their winning streak increase to six games on Friday evening after posting a three-games-to-none (30-15, 30-23, 31-29) victory over Bates. Lisa Drennan ’09 continued her impressive play, leading the way with 21 kills in the match. Rebecca Rodger ’08 took care of most of the assists, tallying 40 of the team’s 46. The Cardinals posted a .292 hitting efficiency, nearly 9 points higher than their season average.

In their first match on Saturday, the Cardinals took on the top-ranked team in the league, Colby. In the end, Colby earned a hard-fought three-games-to-one victory (27-30, 31-29, 14-30, 11-30). Co-captain Erin Reding ’06 picked up 14 kills while Roger again led the team with 41 assists. Colby posted a .275 hitting efficiency to the Cardinals’ .094 and would improve their NESCAC mark to 6-0 before weekend’s end.

Left with only a ten-minute break in between matches, the Cardinals had little time to recover from the tough loss and refuel for their next match. Co-captains Reding and Tiffany Bryan ’06 did a great job getting the team refocused and energized under the tough circumstances.

The captains’ leadership came through in the closing match of the weekend, as the Cards defeated Bowdoin three games to one (30-20, 31-33, 31-29, 30-19). Reding pounded out 14 kills and Jettie Word ’08, inspired by her captain’s performance, added 12 kills of her own.

“We had a rough match against Colby, but we recovered quickly to get a great victory over a solid Bowdoin team,” said Word.

Tory Molnar ’07 contributed a notable 17 digs on the defensive side. As a team, the Cardinals’ hitting efficiency jumped back up to .261.

Despite the disappointing loss to Colby, the Cardinals had a successful weekend in New London, improving their NESCAC record to 3-3 and their overall record to 13-6. Drennan added 48 kills to her season total, while Molnar dug deep for 59 digs.

The team will next face Western Connecticut State University at home on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
