Cardinals fall to the Pioneers

After starting their season with a 0-3 record, the women’s soccer team dropped its fourth consecutive game this past Wednesday to the Pioneers of Smith College. Tri-captain Natalie Cohen ’06 provided some Cardinal offense by scoring a goal in the 69th minute of play but it was too little, too late for comeback and the Pioneers went on to win 3-1.

The goals from Smith’s Catherine Peo, Brittoni Famous, and Monroe Peterson put the hosts up 3-0 until Cohen’s goal brought back some kind of spirit to the Wesleyan offense. The last time Wesleyan beat Smith College was in 1996, when the Cardinals won 3-1.

“Although we were the more skilled team, we didn’t show up to play, and Smith quickly capitalized to put us down 2-0. In the second half we stepped it up by scoring a goal, but the lack of energy in the first half was too much to be compensated for in the second,” said Tri-captain, Sarah Hopkins ’06, who had three shots on goal Wednesday.

Although scoring only one goal, Wesleyan took almost as many shots as Smith in the game. Smith was able to capitalize better both on corner kicks and unassisted goals.

“Until we come out and play the full 90 minutes, the results aren’t going to our way,” said Head Coach Eva Bergsten-Meredith.

Wesleyan continues its season this Saturday, Sept. 24, hosting NESCAC powerhouse Middlebury College at home.

“This is our goal for this weekend’s game against Middlebury,” Hopkins said. “To start the game focused and to play the full ninety minutes together as a team.”
