Rachel Soriano ’06 remains in critical but stable condition at Hartford Hospital. On Sept. 10, a car hit Soriano while she was attempting to cross Church Street. She has been unconscious since the accident.
According to an e-mail sent to the Wesleyan community Monday by Dean of the College Maria Cruz-Saco, Soriano suffered a trauma to her brain. Initially, this caused life-threatening swelling, though the swelling has since subsided. Doctors hope for a full recovery. Any updates on the condition of Soriano will be sent to the entire Wesleyan community via e-mail.
“This is a blow to the Freeman Asian community,” said Charles Yang ’08. “On the same day we were having the first general meeting for all Freeman Scholars on campus. The accident happened right before our potluck dinner. Most of us didn’t know what happened until we got there and we were shocked.”
Director of Communications Justin Harmon said that Soriano’s mother, who lives in Quezon City, Phillipines, was in the country at the time of the incident. She was able to be by Soriano’s side at the hospital.
The campus is addressing safety concerns raised by Soriano’s accident.
“The day right after, we met with the Dean of the College, Maria Cruz-Saco, and we raised several issues, like how to make things safer on Church street, what’s the most efficient manner to contact the family of international students in an emergency and I think there also are concerns about insurance and medical costs,” Yang said. “But the biggest concern is still the safety of Rachel and we just wish she will recover as soon as possible and return to us soon.”
Family and friends are asking for everyone to keep Soriano in their thoughts and prayers.
