Three games in and women’s soccer is still searching for a win. Once again, the Lady Cards came close, but a pair of late, backbreaking goals for Trinity sealed the deal and Wesleyan headed home to Middletown with a 3-1 loss.
Trinity struck lightning quick, with an opening goal in the 12th minute.
“Throughout the first half, we had possession of the ball the majority of the time,” said Captain Sarah Hopkins ’06. “It was frustrating to be scored on when we were dominating the game. But the goal was early and we knew we had plenty of time to come back.”
Indeed, the Cardinals did come back. After a few chances, early in the second half Wesleyan’s freshman assassin, Marissa Trevisan ’09, found the back of the net for her second goal of the young season.
“After Trinity’s goal, we had some good scoring chances,” said Trevisan. “At halftime, we switched our formation, which gave us even more scoring opportunities. Lauren Ogden [’07] played a beautiful cross, so all I had to do was run onto it. After we scored, there was a shift in momentum and they were definitely scared.”
“When we scored, we had the momentum and we thought we were on the way to a victory,” said Hopkins.
Sadly for the Cards, that momentum would not result in any further goals. In the 73rd minute, Rachel Talentino knocked in her second goal of the day for Trinity. The Bantams added another for insurance a few minutes later, making the score 3-1. It would remain that way when the buzzer sounded to end the game.
“Trinity’s second goal was tough because we were right back in the hole we had just dug ourselves out of,” Hopkins said. “In a 1-1 tie game the third goal often dictates the outcome.”
Up next for the Cardinals is a match-up tomorrow against Smith College. Wesleyan will look to grab their first win of the fall season and the team is confident they can do it.
“So far, we have been playing better overall games than some of our opponents but just not getting the results we want,” Trevisan said. “Eva said that once we’re able to capitalize on other teams’ mistakes and finish plays in the offensive third, we should be fine.”
