Men’s Tennis Rolls Over Manhattanville
Inexperience was no problem for Wesleyan men’s tennis last Sunday, as the exceptionally young Cards rolled to a 7-2 victory over Manhattanville in Middletown. The Cardinals fielded a singles lineup of five freshmen, all of whom helped carry the Cardinals to victory as Wesleyan swept all six singles matches. The Cards also won one of three doubles matches for the final score.
Jeff Legunn ’13 had an easy time at the No. 1 singles spot, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 victory, and Michael Glen ’13 rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. Ravy Uong ’13 (No. 2) and John Parsons ’13 (No. 4) both pulled out 7-5, 6-3 victories, and Alex Hirsch ’13 won his match 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 5. Competing in the No. 3 spot, Michael Piderit ’12, the lone non-freshman in the lineup, cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Piderit and Parsons teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while Legunn and Uong suffered an 8-3 loss at the top spot. Robert Troyer ’12 and Matt Schaff ’11 fell in their match at No. 3, 8-5.
The Cardinals will be back on the courts Tuesday afternoon with a 4:00 match at Coast Guard.
Field Hockey Shut Out at Williams
The field hockey team suffered a 3-0 setback at Williams in its opening match of 2009, extending its winless streak in the Purple Valley despite dominating the Ephs on the stat sheet. The Cardinals fired 20 shots to Williams’ eight and led in corners 14-3, but it was the Ephs that came away with their second straight 3-0 victory over Wesleyan.
Williams tallied all three of its goals in a 10-minute span late in the first half, jumping on the board at 21:24 and concluding its scoring burst with just under five minutes left in the half. Wesleyan outshot Williams 7-6 in the opening frame, but the Cardinals failed to put any of their shots on net. Wesleyan held a 13-2 shot advantage in the second half, but four saves by Williams kept the Cardinals at bay.
Allie Lynch ’11 paced the Cardinals’ offense with eight shots, including two on goal. Ashley McLaren ’13 fired five shots, and Morgan McCauley ’12 and Alexa David ’10 had three each. Tori Redding ’13 played all 70 minutes in her first career start in the cage for Wesleyan.
Wesleyan returns to action with a Saturday home game against Colby. Three of the teams’ last four games in Middletown have gone to overtime, with Wesleyan pulling out a victory in all three; six of the squads’ last seven games overall have been decided by one goal.

Babson won the team title with a score of 600, while 2009 NESCAC runner-up Trinity shot a 605 to tie Susquehanna for second.
