Welcome Back Students!!
The Office of Public Safety would like to inform you about some of the programs we will be continuing and some that we will be starting this semester.
Residence Officer Program: We are starting our second year with the Residence Officer Program. Last academic year we had officers assigned to Clark Hall, Fauver Residence Hall, Butterfield A,B, and C and 200 Church Street. This year we will be expanding and will also have officers assigned to 156 High Street, 202, 230,240,316,344 and 356 Washington Street. The officers act as liaisons for the students, updating their residents on any problems or concerns on campus and can be helpful in solving problems at the residence. They will conduct crime prevention initiatives in their areas and will be available to answer any questions you may have. Each year we will look to expand the program slightly.
Tuesdays at Usdan: Each week Public Safety will again have a table set up at Usdan on Tuesday evenings from 6-8pm to meet and talk with students. We started this last fall and it went well. If you ever have a question for us but have not had the time to come to our office or speak to us around campus stop by our table any Tuesday eveni ng.
Operation Identification: Public Safety will again be running property registrations for you to record serial numbers and engrave a number or other identifying mark on your valuable property (laptop, stereo, TV, camera, bike etc.). This can prove useful if the property is ever lost or stolen. A lot of times recovered property is not returned to the owner because the serial number was not available and there is no way to determine who the rightful owner is. We will be conducting registration sessions in dorms where we have officers assigned. Any RA can also set up a date and time for us to come to your residence hall and conduct one for your residents by calling x2818 or emailing Lt. Verrillo at pverrillo@wesleyan .edu. You can also come to our office to pick up a property registration form and after filling it our return it to our office. We also have engravers available for use which can be picked up at our office. You will need to leave your ID to sign out an engraver.
RAD Training: This summer three members of our department were certified as RAD
(Rape Awareness Defense) Instructors and will be running classes for females on our campus. We are in the process of setting up the program and more information will be available in the near future.
Severe Intoxication Panels: Public Safety, in conjunction with WesWell, the Dean of Students Office and Res Life will be putting on four panels this semester. The panels have been set up to provide information that will help students understand the best course of action to take for a friend that can not make an informed decision due to their impairment. Representatives from WesWell, Public Safety and Dean of Students Office will provide information from their respective offices on how they handle intoxication isues. The panels will be held at 7:30 pm on the following Tuesdays: September 15th @Fauver Residence Hall lounge; September 22nd @Butterfield B lounge; September 29th @Clark Hall lounge; October 6th @200 Church Street. We look forward to seeing you there.
Remember, crime prevention on our campus is EVERYONE’S responsibility. We all need to work together to maintain a safe environment to live, work and learn.
