The Wesleyan softball team hosted neighboring team US Coast Guard Academy for a mid-week, out of conference game this past Wednesday, April 27. The Cardinals remained steady on the defensive side for a majority of the game, but failed to generate any offensive activity, ultimately falling 0-3 to the number four ranked team in Division III.
The Coast Guard pitcher posted nine strikeouts and only allowed four hits throughout the contest. Allee Beatty ’13 led the Cards with a single in the first and sixth inning extending her hitting mark to twelve straight games. Beatty’s single in the sixth was followed by a single from Talia Bernstein ’11, the only inning in the game in which Wes was able to make an offensive push. Beatty and Bernstein are currently tied for most hits with 38, but Bernstein’s average (.418) remains higher, as she has one less appearance at bat. On the mound for the Cardinals was Dana Levy ’12 who only allowed six hits throughout the contest, but three were converted into the winning three runs for Coast Guard in the third inning. Wesleyan last defeated Coast Guard when the teams met in 2008 by an impressive 12-4 margin.
The Cardinals will end their season this weekend, as they travel to Hamilton College for their last NESCAC West conference weekend. The squad will play a single game on Friday, April 29, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday.
