The Cine-Files

Well, it’s the last week for the film series. To those of y’all we haven’t lost to comps though, there’s plenty of cinema-based excitement to hold you over until the midnight premiere of “Thor.” For the three last nights in the Goldsmith—with glorious, more appreciable AC now that it’s suddenly warm—there’s a classic piece of Italian art, a haunting and beautiful Polish documentary, and a cross-pond offering of hilarious white-boy angst. There’s also a talk with Mark Levin ’07, the creator of the Sundance original show Brick City, on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Powell. He’ll be showing an episode and giving a Q&A afterwards. It’s about Newark, so it’s bound to be delightful. Then, of course, on Friday there’s a little Indy adventure playing on Foss…

Birds, Beasts, and John Wayne.

A full year for the series.

More to show, always.

8 ½

1963. Italy/France. Dir: Federico Fellini. With Marcello Mastroianni. 138 min.

WEDNESDAY, April 27, 8 p.m. $5

One of Fellini’s greatest achievements, “8 ½” drifts from fantasy to reality and back again with a fascinating rhythm, showcasing some of the most gorgeous black and white cinematography there is. It’s also one of the best films about filmmaking (watching this will absolve you of ever having even thought about seeing “Nine”). Fellini’s tightly constructed story can’t be told; it has to be seen.  Plus, most of it takes place at a spa, so it’s easy on the eyes.

FAREWELL TO MY COUNTRY

2002. USA. Dir: Andrzej Krakowski. 100 min.

THURSDAY, April 28, 8 p.m. FREE

This event, sponsored by the Jewish and Israeli Studies Program, will illuminate an often-neglected moment in European history. Krakowski utilizes a variety of archive footage recreations and first-hand accounts to relate the story of the expulsion of Poland’s Jewish community after an uprising against the Communist government in 1968. Krakowski will give a talk before the film starts.

INDIANA JONES: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

1981. USA. Dir: Steven Spielberg. With Harrison Ford, Karen Allen. 115 min.

FRIDAY, April 29, 8 p.m. $5

Congratulations to you, Argus reader! You now know which film won the poll for our movie night on Foss. And really, there was only ever one right choice. Between the snakes, the planes, the chases, the face-meltings, John Williams’s rousing score, and a scruffy space smuggler archeologist played by Harrison Ford, “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is one of the most enduring and entertaining action adventures ever committed to celluloid. Eat, drink, and smoke as you like; just don’t forget your ticket.

BILLY LIAR

1963. UK. Dir: John Schlesinger. With Tom Courtenay, Julie Christie. 98 min.

SATURDAY, April 30, 8 p.m. FREE

At once a comedy and poignant character study, full of fantastical asides and biting British satire, “Billy Liar” is driven by Tom Courtenay’s grand performance of a lowly funeral store clerk with two fiancés who, on the side, runs a country called Ambrosia and writes for a television comedy in London. No, really. Rich cinematography, playful humor, and the ever-radiant Julie Christie make this film a great way to cap off your weekend and the series.
