The Cardinal men’s and women’s track teams traveled to Northeastern University this past Saturday to compete in the Solomon Invitational. This meet is attended by Division I, II, and III schools, and big name teams like Boston College, UMass Boston, and the Naval Academy were all present. Both Wesleyan teams scored near the top for many of the races.
The men’s team came together to have a great showing at Northeastern. Highlighting the meet was the 4x800m relay team of Austin Cotant ’13, Seth Hafferkamp ’12, Matt Katz ’11, and Sam Roth ’13, which placed first with a time of 8:05.42, edging out the second place squad by .29 seconds. Roth also came through with a fifth-place finish in the 800m (1:58.96). Katz gave the top competitors a run for their money when he came in 3rd in the 1000m (4:03.80), closely followed by Cotant in fifth place (4:05.92). In the field events, Tommie Lark ’12 came in second place with a triple jump of 46-2. Ernest Wingate ’14, who is having a stellar first season, came through with a second-place finish in the 110m hurdles (0:15.70).
The women’s team had some great individual performances as well. Hannah Zimmerman ’13 dominated the 5k, coming through with a first-place finish of 18:15.87, a new personal record. Following right behind her were Libby Lazare ’14 (18:20.25) and Nellie Triedman ’13 (18:23.67). This pack of runners was almost fifteen seconds ahead of the fourth place finisher. Ceili Brennan ’13 and Nicole Lepre ’13 took fifth (2:25.76) and seventh (2:29.84), respectively, in the 800m. Julia Frieze ’12 took sixth in the 400m (1:01.77). On the field, Kulowski had a sixth-place finish in the triple jump (34-61/4).
Next weekend both team will head to Amherst for the Little Three meet.
