Late Game Rally Not Enough as Cards Fall to Elms College

Despite a ninth inning rally, the Cardinals could not hold off the Blazers this past weekend as they dropped the away contest to Elms College by a score of 4-3.  Mike Migiel-Schwartz ‘14 pitched three scoreless innings allowing just two hits, while Kyle Weiss ‘12 knocked in two runs on two hits to lead Wesleyan batters in the loss.

After getting off to a quick start, the Cardinals found themselves down by two runs after five innings of play.  Three shutout innings from Migiel-Schwartz brought the Cards into the ninth inning where the bats came alive.  Julian Sonnenfeld ‘13, who was named NESCAC player of the week after this past weekend’s solid showing against Hamilton, Jon Sheehan ‘13, and Derek Dettorre ‘13 each singled, and with the help of an Elms College error, the Cards scored two runs to level the score at 3-3.  With runners in scoring position, however, the Cardinals were not able to take the lead and stranded three players on base to end the inning.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Blazers seemed to find their stroke in the ninth inning as well, breaking the tie with no outs in the bottom of the inning behind a leadoff double that would eventually come home to score.

The Cardinals, 12-10 on the season, look to regain their momentum from last weekend’s success against Hamilton, as they take on rival Williams College in an afternoon double-header this Saturday, April 9, at home.
