A Challenge

One of the my favorite parts about winter break—aside from seeing my family, hanging out with old friends, and kickin’ it with my poodle—is having close to nothing in the way of responsibilities. It’s a time to dull your senses; it’s a time to give your brain and body a little rest from the five hour problem sets, the 10 page papers, the sleepless nights, and the unhealthy levels of caffeine intake.

Alas, if only there were a way to give yourself that well deserved break from all the bullshit without feeling entirely unproductive………..What’s that Captain Planet?!?!? We should spend our break thinking of proposals to submit to the Green Fund?!?! Wow! It turns out, there is a way do something that could end up being very productive and rewarding for our entire campus community that requires very minimal effort. Students created the Green Fund, students run it, and students pay to keep it going. It is one of the areas on campus where we—as students—have almost complete and direct control, and because of that there is a great potential for us, as students, to use our creativity, ingenuity, and diversity of ideas that define us at Wesleyan, to really have beneficial and meaningful impacts on our campus community.

With that in mind, I challenge our community to give some serious thought as to ways in which we can improve our campus’ sustainability. Don’t let magnitude, cost, or economic efficiency slow you down. Think big or think small, but think; think of some awesome ideas and together, we can figure the details out along the way. Let’s make this winter break count for something. Let’s take this time to develop our thoughts and come January 20th, let’s start implementing some real change on campus.
