Track and Field Starts Season Strong at Invitational Meet

On Saturday, Dec. 4, the Wesleyan men’s and women’s indoor track teams started off their season at the annual Wesleyan Invitational meet along with Connecticut College, Medgar Evers College, and York College. Both home teams had strong individual performances in their first showing of the season. There was no team scoring, but the Cards held their own in all events.

For the women’s team, Lia Monti ’13 won the 400-meter dash by more than five seconds with a time of 1 minurte, 4.41 seonds. Monti, who had an outstanding freshman season, will look to continue to be a threat in the 400-meters as the season progresses. In the finals of the 55-meter dash, Yatta Zoker ’14 had a third place finish with a time of 8.00, while Emma Vasta-Kuby ’14 came in fifth, clocking in at 8.12. Sierra Livious ’14 also had a strong first meet in the 200-meter dash, coming in second with a time of 28.47. On the field, the Wes women had two first place finishes. Ashley Swan ’13 won the weight throw with a toss of 36-3 3/4 and Sierra Livious ’14 captured the shot put with a 33 3/4 effort.

On the men’s side, there were four first-place finishes. In his first college meet, Ernest Wingate ’14 earned two first-place finishes. He captured his first victory in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.04, and the second in the 4×400 meter relay.  In the relay, Wingate was joined by Paulie Lowther ’13, Jack Pacelle ’13, and Tommie Lark ’12. Lowther also won the 55-meter dash clocking in at 6.69, while Pacelle captured the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.75.

Both teams look ready for breakout seasons this winter. Next up for the Cards is the Crowell Open on Jan. 8 at US Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
