A Letter to President Roth Re: Zonker Harris

Dear President Roth,

I graduated from a university, University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC), that was known as the “hippie” university and whose mascot is the banana slug. We are proud of all that, and they have brought much publicity to the campus, probably more so than its academic excellence and many exceptional graduates. Has it hurt UCSC in any way? Not at all.

Similarly, I believe that Zonker Harris Day, contrary to the opinion apparently held by you and some other administrators and board members, brings Wesleyan far more and more positive publicity than the solid, middle-of-the-road reputation that your university has among those who are aware of it. As with UCSC, I am aware that Wesleyan is a quality institution, but most people in this country know nothing of either university.

Revel in the fun of Zonker Harris Day and the off-the-wall character that it adds to the campus’s image. Appreciate that it makes many people aware of your institution, as with UCSC, who knew nothing of it before. Maybe it will help attract new students, new donors who would be interested that Wesleyan is not a button-down, stuffy university with no sense of humor.

Cheers,

John Hogle

How are you so well meaning yet so, so clueless as to Wesleyan’s traditions and reputation.

This is actually a pretty spot-on analysis, in my opinion. Many of my friends at Wes chose to come here in large part because they perceived the school as being a fun-loving environment conducive to free spirits – a veritable alternative to the “stuffy university with no sense of humor.”

The irony here, of course, is that without Roth’s role-playing there would have been no “villian” in the piece, no fourth wall to break and ultimately no reason for a week’s worth of cartooning which everyone admits was funny. Wesleyan should consider itself lucky to have such willing and cooperative “fictional” alter ego.

IMO Zonker Harris is often more real and less a cartoon character than Roth-

Reminds me of when Wesleyan hired an image consultant to rebrand them. After many thousands of dollars they came up with “The independent Ivy”.

A few days later a majority of the students on campus sported badges saying “Poison Ivy” – that was the end of that one.

They can try middle of the road rep as much as they want, the student body usually has it covered.

    Wait… “Poison Ivy” happened?

I would be damned well down for that. Let’s bring that back.
