The 5-W Guide to Kayo Dot

The Who: Kayo Dot, Ben Seretan & The Japanese

The Why: C’mon, this show sells itself! I mean, hasn’t everyone heard of Kayo Dot? To the people who have heard of them, I’ll see you there. Now to convince everyone else. Most times in describing a band, people will tell you a genre early on, and why not? It’s a great way to get a quick read on whether someone would like a band or not based on similar artists. Describing Kayo Dot in that manner is a challenging affair: they blend elements of jazz, classical music, post-rock and others to create pieces better described as movements or atmospheres than songs. It sounds cliché, but listening to Kayo Dot is similar to a journey. Frontman Toby Driver threw off the creative restraints of his old band (Maudlin of the Well) to continue experimenting with the natural progression of music itself. The band’s sound seamlessly incorporates strings, horns, and guitars into its own schema. If that seems to tempt pretentiousness, rest assured that the band can back it up. Kayo Dot’s 2003 effort Choirs of the Eye is considered by many music geeks—this one included—as one of the best albums of the past decade. This show’s a must-see for the die-hard music fans.
