Crew Teams Row in New Englands
The men’s and women’s crew teams returned to Worcester, Mass., on Saturday for the annual New England Rowing Championships. In varsity eight action, the Wesleyan men placed sixth of 12 crews, while the Cardinal women took 13th in a field of 14.
The men’s varsity eight boat of Sam Hoefle ’13, Parker Cook ’10, Elliott Skopin ’11, Terrence Word ’11, Bryce Hollingsworth ’13, Spencer Hattendorf ’12, Gilder Keeler ’11, Trevor Michelson ’13, and coxswain Rosemary Ostfeld ’10 clocked in 6:12.8 in the heat to place third out of six boats and advance to the Grand Final. Wesleyan finished sixth in the six-crew race with a time of 6:39.2; Williams took first overall with a 6:18.1 timing, 0.6 seconds ahead of Trinity. The men’s second and third varsity eight boats also advanced to the Grand Final; the second varsity eight placed sixth with a 7:01.9 clocking, while the third varsity eight took fourth (in a four-boat race) with a time of 7:05.1.
The women’s varsity eight boat of Becky Gillig ’12, Claire Tradewell ’11, Becca Schofield ’11, Greer Dent ’12, Catie Steidl ’11, Emilie Kimball ’11, Julia Mulhern ’12, Chritina Ermilio ’13, and coxswain Sami Pop ’11 placed 13th of 14 crews in the race. The Cardinals placed fifth of five crews in the heat with a time of 7:15.4 and placed second of three boats in the Third Level Final with a 7:47.4 clocking, behind Coast Guard (7:33.7) but over 20 seconds ahead of Colby (8:08.7). The second varsity eight boat placed 13th of 13 teams, being edged by Tufts in the heat with a 7:46.7 time and placing sixth in the Petite Final (8:16.0), again just behind Tufts. The novice eight boat placed 11th of 11 boats; the crew placed fifth in the heat, trouncing Middlebury by 3.1 seconds, but finished 5.8 seconds behind the Panthers in the Petite Final.
Both crews return to Worcester on Sunday for the ECAC Collegiate Rowing Championships.
Coleman ’10 Scores at N.E. Track Championships
Chris Coleman ’10 placed eighth in the 800-meter run at the New England Division III Championships at Tufts over the weekend, the only Wesleyan athlete to score on either the men’s or women’s side. Coleman’s finish gave the Cardinal men one team point as they finished 25th of 25 scoring teams at the meet.
Coleman’s time of 1:54.86 was under half a second shy of the fifth-place finisher as he edged the ninth-place runner by 0.1 seconds. The next-best finish for the Wesleyan men in the two-day meet came courtesy of Jamie Lawrence ’12, who placed 11th in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:59.03. Although the Wesleyan women had no point-getters, the Cardinals Julia Mark ’13 did place ninth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:43.77 for the team’s best finish.
Both teams will head to Boston this weekend for the New England Open meet, which will be held at Northeastern University Friday and Saturday.
