Amherst women’s golf, ranked second in Division III, won the 2010 Jack Leaman Women’s Championship with a two-day score of 659, finishing 10 strokes ahead of second-place Wellesley College. The Lord Jeffs were led by junior Hayley Milbourn, who shot a two-over-par 72 on the second day of competition to earn medalist honors and help lead Amherst to its fifth team title of the academic year.
Bates junior Chris Murtagh was named NESCAC Field Performer of the Week after racking up 28 points during the Maine State Championships. Murtagh recorded a distance of 54.45 in the hamer throw and had three second-place finishes and a fifth-place showing in the Championships. Teammate Rich McNeil placed first in the shot put, hammer throw, and discus throw, as Bates came away with the state title.
Bowdoin women’s ice hockey coach Stacy Wilson has resigned after three years at the helm in Brunswick. Wilson helped lead the Polar Bears to consecutive double-digit winning campaigns in 2008-09 and 2009-10 after winning just five games in 2007-08. Wilson went 28-35-9 overall at Bowdoin, including a 20-13-2 mark in her last 35 games. In a statement released by the school, Wilson announced she decided to return to the Canadian province of New Brunswick due to personal considerations.
Colby senior Adam Choice has been selected to play in the New England Basketball Coaches Association (NEBCA) Division III Senior All-Star Game on Sunday at Babson College. Choice, a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-American, ranks eighth on the all-time scoring list at Colby with 1,534 points and was named the Maine State Division III Player of the Year the past three seasons.
Conn. College men’s lacrosse remained unbeaten on the year with an 8-6 victory over Tufts on Saturday. Senior Steve Dachille netted five goals in the game to lead the Camel offense, and goalkeeper Rob Moccia stopped nine Tufts shots. The Camels can lock up first place and host the NESCAC Championship for the first time with a win at Colby on Saturday.
Hamilton women’s lacrosse rose to the top spot in the latest IWLCA Division III poll. The Continentals were last ranked No. 1 on March 17, 2009. Hamilton has been ranked in the top five all year and is now the only undefeated team remaining in Division III, standing 13-0 after a 19-3 rout of Utica College on Tuesday.
Middlebury women’s lacrosse player Carrie Sparkes was recently awarded the Madeleine Kunin Public Service Award, given annually to a student from a Vermont Campus Compact (VCC) member school for outstanding public service and leadership. Sparkes helped found the Service Cluster Board at Middlebury, and has also worked with the homeless at the John W. Graham Emergency Shelter. Sparkes is a four-year member of the Middlebury women’s lacrosse team and is currently a tri-captain in her senior year.
Trinity junior midfielder Rachel Romanowsky was named NESCAC Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week on Monday. Romanowsky tallied five goals and five assists during a 2-0 week for Trinity, which sits first in the NESCAC with a 6-1 conference record. Romanowsky had two goals and four assists in an 11-9 win at Springfield on Thursday and added a hat trick and an assist in a 12-8 win over Middlebury on Saturday, Trinity’s first against the Panthers since 1989.
Tufts announced Carl Junot, who had been an assistant men’s soccer coach at Harvard the past two seasons, has been named head coach of men’s soccer. Junot replaces 20-year head coach Ralph Ferrigno, the all-time leader in victories at Tufts. Junot, a 2001 graduate of Furman University, also coached at the University of New Mexico before landing at Harvard.
Williams senior goalkeeper Stephen Vrla was named NESCAC Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week after posting a .700 save percentage during a 1-1 week for the Ephs. Vrla recorded 19 saves in a 6-5 overtime victory against Wesleyan on Saturday, Williams’ third straight regular-season victory over the Cardinals. He also stopped nine shots in a 7-6 loss at Union College on Wednesday.
