Men’s Squash Finishes 27th at Nationals
The men’s squash team went 2-1 at the National Team Tournament over the weekend to finish third in the “D” division and 27th overall. The Cardinals rolled over M.I.T. 9-0 and trounced Northwestern University 6-3 but fell to Conn. College 5-4 in the tournament.
Wesleyan began play with a 9-0 win over M.I.T. Friday at Yale, a match in which every Cardinal won by a 3-0 count. The Cardinals took on Conn. College at home on Saturday but dropped a narrow 5-4 decision, with Matt Candal ’11 (No. 2, 3-1), Dale Kobrin ’11 (No. 3, 3-2), Nate Fowles ’10 (No. 4, 3-1), and Brewster Lee ’13 (No. 5, 3-0) winners for the Cardinals.
Wesleyan ended its dual-match season on a high note, defeating Northwestern 6-3 at home on Sunday. Candal (3-0), Kobrin (3-1), Lee (3-0), Lonnie Gibbs ’10 (No. 6, 3-1), Luke Wherry ’13 (No. 7, 3-0), and Shivan Bhavnani ’13 (No. 9, 3-0) all won their matches, with Candal, Kobrin, and Lee all finishing Nationals 3-0.
The Cardinals ended the dual-match season with a 12-15 record. Candal led the team in wins with a 16-11 mark, while Wherry was second at 15-10. Kobrin and Lee each finished 14-13, while Bhavnani had the team’s best winning percentage at .609 (14-9).
Teams Find Success at Championships
The Cardinal tracks teams traveled to Maine for the New England Division III Championships over the weekend, with both teams recording a number of strong performances. The Wesleyan women placed 14th out of 26 scoring teams with 15 points at the University of Southern Maine, while the Cardinal men amassed five points to place 18th of 22 scoring teams at Bates.
The Lady Cards’ distance medley relay squad of Jessica Levin ’11, Julia Mark ’13, Sarah Hensiek ’13, and Ceili Brennan ’13 led Wesleyan with a second-place finish among 14 entries, clocking in 12:28.97 to pick up eight points. 10 of the Cardinals’ 15 points came in the relay events, as the 4×200 relay team of Lia Moni ’13, Kiran Sheffrin ’10, Julia Frieze ’12, and Isabella Cucchi ’13 (1:50.54) and 4×400 team of Monti, Sheffrin, Frieze, and Beth Kenworthy ’10 (4:10.73) both placed eighth. Ravenna Neville ’10 accounted for the other five points, taking fourth in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:27.51.
The Wesleyan men were led by the distance medley relay team of Justin Spring ’10, Avinash Sridhar ’10, Chris Coleman ’10, and Matt Katz ’11 took fifth with a time of 10:29.63. Bryan Marsh ’13 added another point for the team with an eighth-place showing in the 5k run (15:35.61).
Next up for Wesleyan is the New England Open, which will be held at Boston University Friday and Saturday.
