Amherst senior Sophia Galleher took first in the women’s race at the NESCAC Cross Country Championships on Sunday. Galleher finished the course in 21:39, edging the runner-up, Wesleyan senior Ravenna Neville, by a second. She became the third Amherst woman in as many years to win the NESCAC individual title. As a team, the Lord Jeffs took third place with 71 team points.

Bates volleyball split its final NESCAC matches to end the year at 16-9 overall, its best record since 2003. The Bobcats rolled to a 3-0 win over host Hamilton before falling to Middlebury 3-1 in their final match. In other Bates volleyball news, senior Liz Leberman recently received third-team CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District laurels. Leberman, a double major in Spanish and history, has a 3.77 GPA and is the first Bates volleyball player to earn the honor.

Bowdoin senior quarterback Oliver Kell was named NESCAC Offensive Co-Player of the week after breaking the Polar Bears’ single-game records for completions (35), passing yards (472), and total yards (513) in a 43-39 home loss to Wesleyan on Saturday. Kell finished the game 35-for-56 with five touchdowns, three of which came in the fourth quarter as Bowdoin rallied from a 36-18 deficit to take a 39-36 lead. The sophomore wide receiver also broke the program record for catches, as he had 14 for 201 yards in the setback.

Colby football improved to 3-3 with a 34-27 home victory over Bates Saturday. Junior receiver Patrick Burns had his second straight 100-plus-yard game, catching six passes for 104 yards in the victory. In his past two games, Burns has caught 11 passes for 223 yards, an average of 20.3 yards per catch. Senior safety Chris Copeland led the Mules with 11 tackles, including eight solo, and added an interception in the win.

Conn. College volleyball earned a 3-2 victory over Wesleyan in its season finale to improve to 21-5 overall and finished tied atop the NESCAC standings at 8-2. Sophomore hitter Amy Newman racked up 28 kills and 21 digs to help lead the Camels to their best finish ever in the conference standings. Newman averaged 5.83 kills, 3.83 digs, and 0.5 aces per set in the Camels’ two matches last week.

Hamilton senior Peter Kosgei was named NESCAC Men’s Cross Country Performer of the Week after winning his third straight NESCAC championship on Sunday. Kosgei completed the course in 25:40, becoming the second individual to win three straight NESCAC titles. Hamilton placed seventh in the race with a score of 176.

Middlebury women’s cross country placed first in the NESCAC Championship on Sunday, claiming its first outright title since 2003. The defending national champion Panthers placed four runners in the top ten to win their tenth NESCAC title, edging second-place Williams by ten points.

Trinity field hockey defeated Conn. College 2-1 in the first round of the NESCAC tournament to improve to 14-1 overall, earning the right to host the semifinal and final rounds for the first time ever. The Bantams will take on sixth-seeded Bowdoin, which has won four straight NESCAC titles, on Saturday afternoon, while fifth-seeded Williams takes on second-seeded Tufts. Against Conn. College, the Bantams used a 21-3 edge in shots to rally from an early 1-0 deficit with a pair of first-half goals.

Tufts volleyball earned the right to host the NESCAC tournament for the second straight year after a 3-1 victory over Amherst in its regular-season finale. The Jumbos had fallen to Trinity 3-2 the night before, their second loss in conference play a year after going 10-0 in NESCAC action. The 26-3 Jumbos open tournament play against eighth-seeded Wesleyan on Friday evening, looking to improve on last year’s semifinal loss to Williams.

Williams women’s soccer, ranked second nationally and first in New England, improved to 15-0-0 with a 4-0 victory over Colby in the first round of the NESCAC tournament. The two-time defending conference champions needed just 23 seconds to take a 1-0 lead on the Mules, and thanks to a pair of saves from netminder Lauren Sinnenberg, that would prove to be all the offense the Ephs needed. Williams has outscored its opponents 52-3 so far this year, including a 28-2 margin against NESCAC foes.
