Poland is currently considering the use of castration as a punishment for some pedophiles. Under the proposed legislation, people convicted of raping children under 15, or of raping close relatives, would be forced to undergo chemical castration on release from prison. The bill still has to pass the upper chamber of parliament, but this is seen as a formality, as the Polish Prime Minister’s party holds 100 percent of the seats.

A Japanese jazz pianist recently performed a ten-minute improvisation on a burning piano. After being lit on fire, the piano quickly became out of tune, but the pianist did not stop playing until all the strings had broken and the instrument was silent. This was the second time the pianist had tried to play a flaming piano; his first attempt was in 1973

A Japanese restaurant has begun employing monkeys as wait-staff. The two simians, who can only work two hours per day due to Japanese animal rights regulations, offer hot towels to patrons, deliver change, and serve beers. The restaurant has seen an increase in business as a result of the new employees, and is currently training three more monkeys.

A special anti-Mafia unit in Naples, Italy, recently seized an alleged mob boss’ pet crocodile. The crocodile, which had been used to extort protection money from local businessmen, was found while searching the suspect’s home for weapons. The animal is believed to be a caiman crocodile, a species native to Central and South America.
