Track Teams Finish Seventh at NESCACs Over the Weekend

While the men’s and women’s Track teams collectively finished seventh out of a field of 11 at this year’s NESCAC Championships at Connecticut College, the weekend was marked by standout individual performances from a wide variety of Wesleyan athletes.

Notching up just over one-third of Wesleyan’s point total on the meet was hops artist Tommy Lark ’11. Lark, who broke the indoor triple jump record twice this winter, once again ruled the sky for the Cards, taking home first `place in the triple and landing smoothly in second in the long jump event. The first-place finish provisionally qualified Lark for the NCAA Division III Championships.

Also shining in field events was Mike Moody ’10, who took third in the javelin, while Newman Hoffman ’09 held it down as always, taking home fifth in the shot put. On the women’s side of things, Kathryn Kulowski ’11 claimed a commanding fifth in the long jump, while catching enough air to put herself in seventh in the high jump event.

Over on the track, the day belonged to Ravenna Neville ’10. Neville, who earned a trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall, qualified for the New England dance after winning the 10,000-meter run outright at NESCACs this weekend. Also burning up the track was senior Liz Wheatley ’09, who cruised into fifth in the women’s 5k.

The Cards also made a strong showing in the 10k on the men’s side, as the dynamic duo of Jonah Blumstein ’09 and Charles Lang ’11 took home second and fourth, respectively. In the distance medley relay, the men’s quartet of Chris Foster ’09, Brad Litchfield ’09, Justin Spring ’10 and Chris Coleman ’10 ran down a third-place finish.

The Cardinal men finished with 54 team points, 5.5 behind sixth-place Middlebury and three ahead of Trinity. Williams took the meet with a team score of 154.5. The Wes women accumulated 29.5 team points on the afternoon, 3.5 ahead of eighth-place Amherst. Williams also won the women’s meet with a team score of 180.

Both teams will be in action again this weekend as select members will compete at the two-day New England Division III Championships, which will be hosted by Springfield College Friday and Saturday.
