Robert Broadfoot ’10: Men’s Squash

Men’s squash is looking to rebound from a mediocre season last year in which the squad went just under .500. The Cardinals return nine players who saw action last year, including Robert Broadfoot ’10, who played the most matches at the one spot and had an 11-9 overall record.

Broadfoot had a solid season in ’07-’08, with an 8-9 record as the one spot and a 3-0 record at the two, dominating his three matches at the number two spot by a combined 9-2 score. At one point during the season Broadfoot won three matches at the one spot in a row.

At the National Team Tournament in Boston last year Wesleyan came in seeded eighth in the “C” Division and ranked 24th overall nationally. Unfortunately the Cardinals lost their first match to NESCAC rival Tufts and were relegated to the consolation bracket. Wesleyan rallied once there beating 21st-ranked Middlebury 5-4 despite having lost to the same team 7-2 earlier in the season. The Cards’ final match was a close loss, 5-4, to sports powerhouse Stanford, and the team ended the season ranked 22nd nationally.

Wesleyan returns seven of its top nine players from last year, and these contributors, along with fourth-year head coach Shona Kerr, are aiming to improve on the team’s 10-11 overall record from 2007-08. Their first chance will be this Saturday, Nov. 22 as the Cardinals take on M.I.T. at Dartmouth.
