Volleyball beats Trinity, scores

The volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight straight matches on Friday, beating Trinity 3-1 for the second time in six days, which improves the team’s record to 15-4 and 4-1 in the NESCAC halfway through the conference schedule.

The first half of the match was close, with Wesleyan winning the first set by five points and Trinity winning the second by three. However, the Cardinals asserted their dominance in the last two sets, winning them by a total of 20 points.

Consistency is a staple for these Cardinals; one can almost predict how each player will perform during each match because they are so reliable. For example, the stars of this match were ones we have seen before—Ellie Healy ’10 had 48 assists and 14 digs, Lisa Drennan ’09 had 21 kills, four aces and 11 digs and Ruby Hernandez ’11 played outstanding defense with 26 digs.

There is no ’I’ in ’team,’ however, and the team played wonderful volleyball as a unit as well. The team’s attack efficiency was an outstanding .297.

Drennan said that the team’s dominating win a day earlier against Connecticut College had left the Cardinals with inspiration and momentum going into the Trinity game.

“[The Connecticut win] gave us great momentum for our game against Trinity,” Drennan said. “We had so much confidence, and just played with so much excitement and energy. It was so fun playing, and I don’t recall looking at the score once, because I was just having so much fun playing.”

The Cards’ next game will be out of conference, at Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday, Oct. 15, and then they will travel to Trinity to take on the NESCAC opponents from Maine this weekend, Oct. 17 and Oct. 18.
