Cardinal Athletics: By the Numbers

3-1 Record of the men’s tennis team, which is off to its best start since 2005-06 (5-0).

9-0 Score by which all three of the women’s tennis team’s (2-1) matches have been decided this season.

38 Points scored by Hamilton during its 3-0 loss to the volleyball team Friday, the fewest won by a NESCAC opponent against Wesleyan since 2000 (when games were best-of-15).

Did You Know…?

Behind seven saves from Nigel Stacey ’11, Wes men’s soccer earned a 1-1 tie against defending national champion Middlebury on Saturday. The game was Wesleyan’s 55th contest against a national champion from the NESCAC in any sport, dating back to 1982. The Cardinals currently hold a record of 1-51-3 in such contests—and all four non-losses have come against Middlebury. The Cardinals are also 0-1-3 in their last four games against a Middlebury national champion (two games in women’s ice hockey and one each in men’s ice hockey and men’s soccer).

On Nov. 3, 1999, the field hockey team defeated Middlebury 2-1 in an ECAC Tournament first-round game, avenging an earlier 2-1 loss in Vermont on Oct. 2. (The Cardinals went on to defeat Colby and Tufts to win the ECAC Tournament.) That game was Wesleyan’s 11th against a national champion from the NESCAC and gave the Cardinals a 1-10 record all-time against champions from their conference. Wesleyan went on to lose its next 32 contests against NESCAC national champions, setting the stage for the women’s ice hockey team’s visit to Middlebury on Jan. 12.

Behind 47 saves from Rachel Stemerman ’09, the Cardinals women’s soccer battled their way to a 1-1 tie, just the third time in their history when they had not lost to the Panthers (Wesleyan came into the game 0-34-2 all-time against their NESCAC foes). (The Cardinals went on to lose 4-1 the following day.) Not to be outdone, the men’s team traveled to Vermont on Jan. 27 and earned a 1-1 tie of its own behind 30 saves from Mike Palladino ’09. Wesleyan entered the game 0-30-0 all-time against the Panthers and was under two minutes away from breaking into the win column before Middlebury tied the game with 1:56 remaining. Fast forward to last Saturday, when the Cardinals again traveled to Middlebury and battled their way to a 1-1 draw, with men’s soccer doing the honors this time.

The tie also snapped Middlebury’s 13-game home winning streak; the Panthers had outscored their opponents 36-1 during the streak. The Cardinals became the first team to score a goal at Middlebury since Sept. 29, 2007, when Colby did so in a 3-1 loss. The game also marked just the second time in Middlebury’s last ten games that the Panthers surrendered a goal; Castleton St. scored in a 2-1 home loss on Sept. 10 in Middlebury’s season opener. For Wesleyan, the tie was just the third time in its last 16 games against Middlebury when it did not lose (the Cardinals are 2-13-1 in their last 16 against the Panthers). Wesleyan’s past four losses against Middlebury have come via shutout; Saturday’s game is just the second time in their last six games when the Cardinals have scored against the Panthers.
