Sports Shorts: Golf team starts the season in the rough

The Wesleyan golf team struggled through tough conditions and a slow pace of play to finish 18th at the Duke Nelson Tournament in Middlebury this past weekend. There was reason for optimism, however, as many members of the team were able to overcome the rain delays, mud, and wind to perform better than expected. Team Captain Eli Wilson ’12 shot a 75-82-157 to place 38th overall, and Pete Taylor ’12 shot a 76-76-152 to place 18th overall.

“I was happy with the way I played – I hit the ball really well and hit a lot of greens; I just struggled with my putting and that’s what held me back from going really low,” Taylor said afterwards. “As for the team, we didn’t play our best golf obviously, but I think there is a lot of room for improvement, and once we get settled into the season, we’ll be able to put up some solid numbers.”

Although the team has struggled to begin the season, they will look to turn things around at the Williams College Tournament this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21.
