Public Safety alerts unhelpful

How are these e-mails supposed to make us feel? I was under the impression that the Public Safety e-mails were designed to make us feel safe. However, this latest set of e-mails about the Pine Street party gone wrong have done nothing of the sort.

The first e-mail read to me like this: last night there was a party just like any other party, except that some hostile non-students tried to enter, and when they were denied they fired a gun. Then they disappeared … but we’re on it.

When I got that e-mail I decided to call Public Safety and get a little more information. I was told they knew nothing more than what was in the e-mail, not even a basic description of the handful of intruders.

Later, I heard from my roommate that the “gunshots” were nothing more than fireworks being shot off by drunk people at a neighboring party. After that I wrote the incident off, but the e-mail I received this evening is sincerely frustrating. From this latest e-mail I gather: PSafe knows nothing more than they did, they don’t even know if the gunshots were in fact fireworks. They know nothing. Thanks for updating me, PSafe.

I write this on Friday night, which begins another round of weekend parties. I feel confident that if anything were to happen to me tonight, PSafe would know nothing about it.
