This Saturday Men’s Soccer won their NESCAC opener in dramatic fashion, breaking a scoreless tie in the 89th minute to earn a crucial victory against the rival Bowdoin Bears, the team that had previously eliminated Wesleyan from last season’s NESCAC Tournament. The goal came courtesy of Senior Matt Nevin, who struck home a pass from Nick Whipple ’10 with little over a minute left in the game. With the win the Cards bounced back from Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Western New England College, improving their status to 1-1 overall. While neither team could find the back of the net for most of the game, Wesleyan enjoyed a clear advantage in shots (14-6) and corner kicks (7-1). Saturday’s final whistle marked the completion of Sophomore goaltender Nigel Stacey’s first career shutout, a statistic he earned with solid play throughout, notching 3 saves and breaking up numerous crosses at the back to keep the Bears off the board. With a 1-0 NESCAC record so far, the Cards have a promising season in front of them as they head to Springfield College for a match this Wednesday.
