Dear all of Wesleyan, let us not be as fickle as the general public.
Last year’s incident on Fountain Avenue was unacceptable. While student behavior may have been rowdy, uncontrolled, and even frightening, it was the police who had guns, gas, and dogs. Those with the most power must show the most restraint. On Fountain, no restraint was shown by any party.
As accounts of the night poured in through Wesleying, e-mails, and phone calls, we all watched, read, and conversed in a mix of horror, outrage, and excitement. We can’t lose that energy, because this is a real issue. This is an issue that we as a school have the power to correct. Starting with the student-Public Safety relationship and leading to Public Safety policy on intervention and contacting the police, change is possible and necessary. The administration, the Wesleyan Student Assembly and, most of all, the student body need to make their voices heard. Keep writing articles. Keep complaining. Keep up the energy.
