This past Saturday, the women’s crew team traveled to Pittsfield, Mass. to take on the University of Vermont and Little Three Rival Williams College. The Cards entered the competition knowing that Williams had a fast women’s varsity eight but were determined to row hard and remain competitive throughout the race.
As predicted, the Ephs rowed ahead of the Cards, completing the race with a 22-second margin. Nevertheless Wesleyan was focused on defeating its other opponent. The crew pulled ahead of UVM and held them off throughout the entire race, finishing 4.5 seconds ahead with a time of 7:14.1. The line-up was from stroke to bow: Liz Holden ’11, Becca Schofield ’11, Emilie Kimball ’11, Catie Steidl ’11, Claire Tradewell ’11, Sofia Warner ’09, Elaine Lauriat ’09, and Linnea Dramer ’10 and coxswain Jinny Jang ’08.
After the race, the stroke seat Liz Holden ’11 remarked that her team received great compliments from the Williams crew who were impressed by the fact that Wesleyan’s varsity eight is comprised of five freshmen. As a young squad, the team has great potential to improve.
Despite the disappointing outcome, the challenging race against Williams was a good experience for the team, which is preparing mentally and physically for the tough competition at New Englands in the first weekend of May.
This past weekend leaves the Cards with a 4-6 overall record at the varsity eight level. The next dual-race takes place this Saturday, April 26, when the crew takes on Connecticut College and Trinity in Worcester, Mass.
