The golf team began its spring season in Fort Pierce, FL over spring break, taking on NESCAC rivals Williams College and Hamilton College at the Indian Hills Golf Club. The Cards finished third in the match, shooting a total of 314 to Hamilton’s 294 and Williams’ 291.
Captain Dave Velardo ’08 led the way for the Cards, firing at two-under par 70 that placed him second of twenty-two golfers. Pacing the Cardinals is a familiar role for Velardo, as he has finished first among Wesleyan golfers in all but five matches during his career. Eli Wilson ’09 played well as well, finishing with a 77. Both Velardo and Wilson began with great first nines, going out in 33 and 35 respectively. Velardo struggled a bit on the back, coming home in 37 while Wilson stumbled in with 42.
Robb McCourt ’08 and Dan De Rienzo ’11 scored for Wesleyan as well. McCourt closed with 88 while De Rienzo shot 83. Hamilton’s Jeff Corbett ’09 earned medalist honors with a round of 69.
The Cards travel to Rhode Island next Friday for an event hosted by Rhode Island College.
