Thanks for taking a stand on sustainable seafood

I was so pleased to see the recent Argus article about students’ concerns with the sushi served at the campus dining facility. As a Wes alum, and an employee of theMonterey Bay Aquarium, I am proud that Wesleyan students are paying attention to the seafood they consume. Bon Appetit Management Company also runs the dining facilities here at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and I’m excited that they have taken over food service for Wesleyan. As a company, they are committed to good business practices and serving healthy, sustainable foods. From the article, it sounds like they have acknowledged the confusion and are working to remedy the situation. Thanks to all the students for paying attention to the seafood served and asking Bon Appetit to explain their actions! I hope the dialogue continues as everyone learns more about sustainable seafood.

As we all discover new ways that our actions impact the environment, it can get confusing. The answers aren’t simple, but I hope as Wesleyan students learn more, they will feel empowered to make choices that reflect their concerns for their own health and the health of the ocean. Working at the aquarium has taught me a lot about sustainable seafood, and if students want to get more information, they can visit http://www.seafoodwatch.org to print out pocket guides and read the detailed reports that support the seafood recommendations.
