BA celebrates Nat’l Seafood Month

Throughout the month of November, Bon Appétit will be joining restaurants and other food vendors across the country in celebrating National Seafood Month. This will provide us the opportunity to highlight our Seafood Watch program that we follow throughout the year. Bon Appétit only serves seafood purchased in accordance with the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch guidelines for sustainability.

This program, established in 1997, provides consumers with a list of sustainable seafood choices based on how the fish are raised, farmed, or caught, along with warnings on high mercury levels found in certain species. Sustainable choices are either caught or farmed in a manner that can be maintained long-term without damaging the surrounding environment or compromising the health or survival of the species. The four factors that threaten sustainable practices are over-fishing, bycatch, habitat damage, and certain fish farming practices. To learn more about each, please visit www.mbayaq.org/cr/seafoodwatch.

We hope you take this opportunity to really learn and taste how sustainable practices really benefit us all. Pick up your own Seafood Watch Guides in cafés across campus so you can support our resources when you dine at home or at your favorite restaurant.
