Last September, we launched Incite Magazine with the mission of bringing together diverse, progressive voices in and beyond the Wesleyan/Middletown community. We aimed to provide well-researched commentary on important political, economic, and cultural issues. In addition, we wanted each article to tell readers “What You Can Do About It,” through a section that connects analysis with activism, featuring resources to motivate readers to become involved in the fight for progressive change. With the help of many members of the Wesleyan community, we’ve launched the website [InciteMagazine.org], released two print editions, maintained an online “Action Calendar” that is updated daily, conducted many interviews with progressive figures like Ned Lamont and Cindy Sheehan, and published dozens of articles on topics ranging from war and international law to environmental issues in Middletown.
Yet, there is still much work to be done. In order for Incite Magazine to grow as an effective journalistic forum and resource for activism, we need even more participation from the Wesleyan community.
As a publication and a community resource, Incite is only as strong as the participants that make it happen. No single article can cover all the angles and perspectives of an issue. For this reason, we strongly encourage a dialogue through response articles that build upon or refute the ideas expressed in the magazine, creating a unique conduit for both intellectual debate and activism.
THIS IS WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP. As the school year comes to a close we need new voices, students who want to take an active role in the organization, and those who want to build a dialogue of progressive commentary linked with activism.
As each of you prepares to write lengthy research papers, study for final exams, or enjoy Foss Hill one last time, I hope you will also consider joining Incite in some capacity, whether through submitting or responding to articles, helping to build the Action Calendar and “What You Can Do About It” sections, or taking an active organizational role in the magazine. We will continue to publish articles and update the Action Calendar over the summer.
In our view, it is essential that Wesleyan has a forum where students can engage in productive dialogue and elevate intellectual discourse to the next level by connecting it to action. As our motto goes, “power of insight, power to incite.”
