Yo Wesleyan/Pre-Wesleyan Folk,
Happy 4/20. While you’re at it on the hill, think about people who aren’t partaking in your fun because they lost out on important government funding of their $47,800 a year tuition.
Did you know that students with drug convictions—including possession of small amounts of marijuana – are automatically stripped of their financial aid? This harmful and unfair penalty has already affected 200,000 students, you might be glad to learn that Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) is currently in a key position to do something about it.
The big debates about this clause in the Higher Education Act (HEA) are this week. If you agree that kicking students out of school causes more—not fewer—drug problems, why not take two minutes today to tell Sen. Dodd how you feel? All you have to do is call Sen. Dodd’s office at 202-224-2823 and politely tell the staffer who answers the phone that as a constituent in CT you want the senator to overturn the student aid drug penalty because it causes more drug abuse and wrongfully keeps students of out schools.
That’s all, one sentence, or if you want, talk their ear off about what you think because that’s what staffers are paid to do while they sit in those swively office chairs.
As students, this policy is directed at us and our peers. This loss of funding *HAS* happened to Wesleyan students, but definitely much more to students at schools with let’s admit it, less lenient drug infraction policies. So, y’know, two minutes, and then you can get back to maxin’ and relaxin’ on a Friday. Cool.
Thanks,
Wesleyan Students for Sensible Drug Policy
