One of the many things I have learned from my “internship” experiences is the importance of business cards. No matter where you go—a conference, happy hour, meetings, lunch—people just throw around their business cards. I say all of this to propose that by THIS weekend everyone on campus starts carrying business cards. They don’t have to be real, they can simply be ones that you print off your computer. On weekend nights when you’re having a great conversation but your friends are dragging you away, just hand that person a business card and you can catch up later (e.g., “If you enjoyed this conversation as much as I have then hey give me a call later”). You don’t have to put your number on it but if you want it could help. Besides this being a hilarious idea, think about all the social benefits this can have on our socially awkward campus:
1.You no longer have to experience that awkward situation where you don’t remember someone’s name but they remember yours… just look at the business card.
2.You no longer have to pretend to or actually put a person you don’t like number in your phone. Just tell them: “I’ll just take your card” then throw it away in the nearest garbage can.
3. If you’re desperate this Saturday at the Eclectic Valentine’s Day party just leave the card in random places (e.g., the bathroom) and maybe someone in your same predicament will call you!
4. You can help spread your own catch phrases or faux-nicknames for yourself—great self-advertisement.
5. It can serve as a conversation starter. “Hey nice wingdings…wanna see my Tunga?”
6. Before you make that walk of shame you can just leave a card in the room… as a friendly reminder.
7. Speaking of friendly reminders, you can slide the card under the door of someone you fancy.
8. Finally, you can now enter all those free dinner and lunch raffles at restaurants!!!!!
What I’m going for here, guys, is explicit subtlety. So be creative, think up some game plans and see you this weekend.
