Psi U hosts festivities

On last Sunday afternoon, Psi Upsilon hosted a haunted house for children of the North End Action Team mentoring program. Events at the haunted house designed for the kids included activities such as bobbing for apples, kickball, and pumpkin painting.

The children particularly enjoyed bobbing for apples, a contest in which they proved to be tough competition for the Psi U brothers.

“The kids genuinely appeared to be having a good time, and the best part was that the brotherhood really got into event. I think it allowed us to show a different side of our personality,” said Psi U member Chris Sarma ’09.

Afterwards, the brothers opened up their rooms and the children went trick-or-treating around the house. Approximately 20 kids from Middletown ranging between the ages of eight and 12 years old showed up to the event along with their mentors. The majority of the Psi U brothers, which includes over sixty members, also attended and participated in the event.

Psi U has directly worked with the NEAT mentoring system over the past few years in attempts to reach out to the community.

“We have had a long standing relationship with the NEAT program, and this event showed how much the brothers enjoy spending time with the kids,” said JZ Golden ’08, the president of Psi U. “You could see the smiles on the kids’ faces when they went trick-or-treating around the house with the Psi U members and their mentors. They were having the time of their lives.”

The event also enabled Psi U, whose events are usually attended only by University students, to open its doors to a different Middletown demographic. Golden mentioned that Psi U plans to host more community service based events in the future, most notably a charity poker tournament in December.
