As campus activism and awareness rises about the situation in Darfur, we pause to remember another genocide that took place sixty years ago. On April 24th the Havurah (Wesleyan’s Jewish Community) will hold a Holocaust Memorial Service in the Memorial Chapel at 9:00 pm, followed by a continuous 24-hour reading of the names of those people who were killed during the Holocaust. At the service Joe Korzenik, a Polish survivor of several concentration camps in Germany and Poland will speak about his experiences. After his talk, there will be a candle lighting ceremony in memory of those who were killed by the Nazis. During these events we remember the six million Jews who were gassed, shot, and in other ways slaughtered during the Holocaust. However, it is also important to recognize the five million others exterminated during World War II, including those identified as Roma (Gypsies), homosexuals, political dissidents such as Communists and Socialists, religious dissidents such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, Slavic peoples, and mentally and physically disabled people. The Havurah would like to include everyone touched by this disaster and/or identifying with affected groups to participate in our memorial to the victims, and ask that you contact Eyal Bar-David (ebardavid@wesleyan.edu) for more information. The reading of names will take place outside the campus center from the evening of April 24 to the evening of April 25. The entire Wesleyan community is encouraged to participate by reading names during a half hour time slot. To do so, please contact Eli Allen (eallen01@wesleyan.edu). We need all of your help to make this a meaningful event.
