I remember, when I was offered admission to Wesleyan, randomly going through the Wesleyan website and reading somewhere (http://www.wesleyan.edu/its/virus/virus-desktop.html) that Wesleyan offers dual support for Macs and PC, support which also includes antivirus software. I then thought to myself about how nice that was, and then immediately sent my “yes” letter back to Wesleyan.
Recently, my trusty Macintosh computer got an awesome virus that pretty much disabled it from running and sending Word files. As a person taking an intensive writing course, it sucks. A lot. I was informed earlier in the year that Wesleyan University supports both Macintosh and Microsoft systems, providing free antiviral software to both systems free of charge. Turns out that Wesleyan university no longer gives antiviral free antiviral software to Macs. Wassup with that? Why are you (ITS/ Wesleyan) preaching dual support when in fact, you don’t really offer the same support that is offered to PCs? Okay, so Mac infections are rare and getting a university license might prove to be economically inefficient. Okay, so don’t tell me that you fully support the Mac. Also, don’t tell me that you offer free virus protection software to both Macs and PCs.
Okay, so if you don’t offer free virus protection for Macs, one would think that the University would sell antivirus software at the computer store. Whoops, turns out the computer store doesn’t even have basic antivirus software for Macs. However, they do have an $80 Internet security package which includes antivirus, but also fits my computer with other crappy useless things. So not only does ITS fail to live up to its dual support promise, it also under serves the Mac community.
I’m not too angry because I too, once thought that Macs were infallible operating systems that would one day take over the world, but wouldn’t it be nice to at least not lie to me and offer basic antivirus software to me at the ITS store instead of making me buy some shady bootlegged product off eBay or a crappy expensive copy from Norton?
Oh. by the way, I got the virus from a file that I took of Blackboard. Watch yourselves, Blackboard might be after you too. Don’t open macros. Macros will destroy your life.
P.S. Mocon, your food has been unexpectedly good for the last few weeks. Thank you for keeping me happy.
