Response to Lake

Dear Bea,

First of all, we (the WSA) want to apologize for any offensive language in the last all-campus email. It was in no way meant to offend, but was admittedly distasteful.

The WSA was particularly criticized last year for its lack of communication, and we have been working really hard to change that this year. We’ve been reaching out to the community through newsletters, weekly emails and Argus reports, open meetings, office hours, and our updated website.

We have also put together a Mid-Year Report which provides a concise version of everything that we’ve done this year. (It will be distributed around campus early next week and will be posted on our website (www.wesleyan.edu/wsa).

We should also address your specific concerns. We have not left gender-neutral housing by the wayside; in fact, a new program will be in place next year. Also, Ruckus is not funded by the Student Activities Fee; we have a free trial period for the year to evaluate whether it is a service that benefits students.

Furthermore, we have no interest in providing University Relations with a platform to fundraise from students. We invited the Vice-President for University Relations to come speak at our meeting so that we could learn about the impact of fundraising on areas of student concern

With this in mind, we know there is much more to be done. We really, really want to know what particular issues you care about. While we’re hoping to meet with you personally to talk about your concerns, we also want to note that we are available and accessible any time any Wesleyan community member has an idea/concern/question/suggestio—ll you have to do is email us (wsa@wesleyan.edu) or come to one of our meetings (Sundays, 7 p.m., PAC 002.) The first ten minutes of each meeting is an open forum for any student who wishes to voice a concern. Our Executive Committee also holds office hours on Mondays, at 9:30 p.m. in the WSA office. Come in! Tell us what’s on your mind!
