What are YOU doing Thursday Night?
Coming to the information session about TEACH FOR AMERICA at PAC 001 at 7:00pm in Meeting Room 1 in the Campus Center? We thought so.
Did you know that educational disparities are greater in our country than they are in almost all other industrialized nations? We live in a nation where your neighborhood determines your educational outcome, a nation where nine-year-olds in urban and rural areas are already three grade levels behind nine-year-olds in wealthier suburbs. The people at Teach for America have taken on doing something about this, and we’re looking for seniors at Wesleyan to help us as part of our 2006 corps (although all classes are welcome to the info session)!
Teach for America is looking for top students to join the core and commit to two years of teaching in 22 urban and rural communities around the nation. This is not a volunteer opportunity; as a corps member you’d be paid directly by the district you work in. We’re looking for individuals from all backgrounds and career interests who want to commit themselves to change individual’s lives and take part in instituting more long-term social equality in this country.
Aside from taking part in this change, Teach for America is a national program highly regarded by top graduate schools in all fields. Harvard Law? Yale School of Management? They’ll all defer your enrollment as a corps. Many other top grad schools will waive your application fee as a corps member, some even offer lucrative scholarships exclusively for Teach for America corps members (like the $6000+ annual scholarship presented to five Teach for America alumni annually by the NYU Ehrenkranz School of Social Work). Additionally, many top employers, such as Morgan Stanley and Wachovia, actively recruit Teach for America alumni.
If you feel moved to help close the achievement gap in America, or even are intrigued by Teach for America’s mission, come to our information session on Thursday, October 6th at 7:00p.m. in the Campus Center. Kira Orange-Jones ’00 who was a member of the 2002 Baton Rouge corps will be on campus to talk about her time in the classroom, as well as how her experience there has helped her in her current endeavors.
