Last Thursday morning I witnessed an accident on Washington St. A girl stepped out onto the street and was hit by a car. Thankfully the driver was not speeding and she was able to stand afterwards and looked shaken rather than broken. I wanted to write this wespeak as yet another reminder of how dangerous Washington St. is and to ask the Wesleyan community to watch out. Since neither the University, Public Safety, the Middletown Police Dept. nor the town seems at all concerned by the lack of crosswalks and the speed of cars on the road, I want to urge everyone to take the time to walk to the nearest crosswalk.
I’m sorry if you live on Lincoln or La Casa, I know it adds a good amount of time to your commute. But I live in Film House and know now never to step into the street without checking at least twice, even when I’m at the crosswalk. People blow through the light at the corner of Washington and Vine like it was just a suggestion. So since those in charge are unwilling to deal with this problem that has resulted in at least one fatality, please watch out. I know it’s frustrating but it’s not worth risking your life for.
