Editors’ Notebook: Restaurant review rebuttal

With all respect to Miriam Gottfried’s weekly Restaurant Review, I feel that I must disagree with her last (generally unfavorable) review of Fiore II on Main Street. In my opinion, Fiore II is a fine Italian restaurant that is extremely, almost unfairly affordable, compared to places that provide food of comparable quality. Of course, Miriam is a critic and it is her job to be a critical culinary judge, but, as with all critics, I think we should question the authority of Miriam’s opinion. We must also remember that Middletown is not New York City, and that the Wesleyan community alone may make or break a fledgling small business. So, I think reviews of all kinds are extremely valuable. But I think that we should consider them and then look past them, particularly in a small town like Middletown where local merchants at least need to be given a chance.
