I am truly embarrassed by the way the student body was represented on Wednesday afternoon. I felt as though one group of student activists appropriated my voice as a Wesleyan student by pretending to represent the entire student body. I hold some of the concerns that were raised on Wednesday, but I would never have treated President Bennet the way that a few members of our student body did, especially if I wanted him to consider my point of view seriously. A small group of students were rude and childish toward President Bennet, shutting down what began as a rational dialogue (a dialogue means both sides get to respond). While President Bennet and other administrators listened to a litany of complaints from students, when it came his turn to respond, I watched students wrench the microphone out of his hands. It is unfair to give the administration an ultimatum, just as it is unfair to ask them to respond to multi-faceted issues with a yes or no answer. You can choose to be angry, shut your ears and turn your back or you can learn to participate maturely. Why was the student body invited to a discussion when it was really a performance?
