Old Methodist Rugby Football Club ends season on win

The Old Methodist Rugby Football Club ended their season with a big 29-9 win over the Trinity Bantams. This season, Wes went undefeated against NESCAC schools and ended up with an 8-2 overall record. The only two defeats were at the hands of Division I and II schools, with much deeper recruiting pools.

“The article [Men’s Rugby takes on the beast] stirred up some emotion on the team as this year is perhaps the best rugby Wesleyan has ever had,” said Dave Delcourt ’05.

“The highlight of this season, other than the outstanding group of guys on the team itself, was our second place finishing at the Beast of the East Tournament in Portsmouth, RI,” said Obhi Hazarika ’04.

Saturday’s game was not only satisfying, yet bittersweet as it was the last that the team will play on Fauver Field. Putting tries for the Old Methodists were Hazarika, Delcourt, Brad Wasik ’04 and Ryan Lewis ’04. The team also proudly sends four of its members to the Connecticut Collegiate Select-Side rugby squad: Brian Byusa ’04, Delcourt, Hazarika, and Seth Katz ’04.They will be competing in Boston this Saturday against other select-sides from around New England.

“Achieving this much has been a thrill, especially since we do not have the resource of a coach. We rely on our older players to share their experience and knowledge of the game with the rest, elevating everyone’s play in the process,” Hazarika said. “Every team we faced this spring had at least one coach, most notably Trinity with two. This speaks volumes about our organization, the commitment of our squad, and our solidarity overall. Coming away from the season, the last was the most memorable.”
