Last Tuesday, a group of about 30 students met with President Doug Bennet in his office hour at noon. They presented him with the WSA proposed chalking policy from 18 December 2002, as well as last Sunday’s WSA resolution calling for administrative adoption of this policy and immediate reversal of the ban. Text of both of these documents appeared in the Argus, dated 30 March 2004.
They also presented President Bennet with a written request that he respond in the form of an all-campus email by noon on Tuesday, 6 April 2004.
At the meeting, before reading the new WSA resolution, President Bennet made a few informal comments about chalking, the ban, and how to improve communication on the Wesleyan campus. The students have asked for an all-campus email response for two reasons:
First, a campus-wide email will inform those who were not able to be present at Tuesday’s meeting of any official administrative response.
Second, the students encourage President Bennet to read the proposal and the new WSA resolution before formally responding to the campus community.
These requests are made in order to promote improved campus communication, the stated goal of President Bennet and the students.
If President Bennet does not send out an all-campus email responding to the re-submission of the proposed chalking policy and the new WSA resolution regarding the re-submission, students will interpret his silence as a tacit refusal to consider and respond to overwhelming student and faculty opinion on this issue. Any refusal, explicit or tacit, will merit further action.
Please expect an email response from President Bennet by noon next Tuesday, 6 April 2004!
