The Wesleyan community will soon have another eating venue to add to the selection of campus eating options. Construction has already begun on a café in the Exeley Science Center, fittingly called “Pi.”
After the decision was made to build a new café by Dining Services the Community Outreach Committee (CoCo), a committee for the Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA), was assigned to finding a name. CoCo coordinated a contest that offered a $100 gift certificate to Broad Street Bookstore to the person whose submission was chosen. Of the 77 entries that were received, CoCo selected 5 to be voted on by the WSA general assembly: Quick Byte Café, Wespresso, Pi, WesCafe, and The Feeding Ground. Pi was chosen in a run off election between the first three names.
Noreen D. Angeletti, Project Specialist in Auxiliary Operations and Campus Services, is the project manager for π. According to Angeletti, the café will be located in the North lobby area of the science tower and offer seasonal patio seating. The café will be able to accommodate approximately 24 students.
“To start, the hours will be 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.” Angeletti said. “We will monitor this to see if adjustments need to be made based on volume.”
Although the official opening is slated for the Dec. 1, the new eating facility is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 20 and have an open food testing on the 24th and 25th. The dining options will include more substantial meal items as well as espressos, lattes, cappuccinos and pastries.
“We will try a concept called Euro baguettes, which is an upscale sandwich with euro style toppings,” said David Pazmino ’03, who now works in Dining Services. Pazmino mentioned that the topping include ingredients such as fontina cheese, pesto, and other spreads. In addition to a new selection of food, the café will have Internet access, offering wireless access and a few fixed computer workstations or kiosks, similar to those already installed in the Freeman Athletic Center and the Campus Center.
π café will add to the current Manslow’s Cart service located outside of classroom 150 in the Science Center, as well as contributing to the overall dining facilities on campus. Organizers hope that the café will also help to alleviate the lines in the Campus Center and give the science community a more convenient option.
“I have class in the science tower two days a week.” Shepherd Smith ’04 said. “I’m always late to work after running over to the Campus Center to get a bite to eat. Hopefully, I’ll get to work on time now.”
