NESCAC tournament preview

They came, they saw and they conquered. And now they face the biggest challenge of all: NESCAC Tournaments. All of the hard practices and the road trips, the celebratory wins and the disappointing losses, all of it comes down to one game for these Cardinals.

Here are the match-ups for NESCAC Championship Weekend.

Men’s Soccer

Soccer takes on the number one Williams College Ephs in their semi-final match this weekend. Having just lost to the Ephs’ on Saturday, the Cardinals look to take revenge on the Purple Cows on their own home turf.

If the Cardinals play like they did against the Amherst Lord Jeffs, they will meet the winner of the No. 2 Bowdoin vs. No. 4 Middlebury game Sunday, Nov. 9th at 12 p.m. in the Championship.

The Showdown: Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m.

Volleyball

Volleyball is taking on the Colby College Mules. Having lost 3-2 in their only other contest against Colby, the Cardinals are looking to kick the Mules out of tournament.

These two teams couldn’t be more evenly matched in statistics: The Mules are ranked second in NESCAC in kills, just ahead of Wes, and are led in this statistic by Cait Cleaver, who not only broke the Mules’ single season-kill record, but was also just named NESCAC Player of the Week. The Mules are also ranked first in service aces led by Kimberly Prescott, just ahead of Wes. Prescott is an important part of the Mules team, holding seven school records. The Mules are also ranked fourth in assists and seventh in digs, right behind Wes in both categories.
The Cardinals have their work cut out for them and look to make their mark in the NESCAC Tournament.

The Showdown: Friday, Nov. 7 at 8 p.m.

Cross Country

Last weekend’s NESCAC Tournament is but a memory now for the Cardinals as they head into the ECAC tournament to do some damage.

The women’s race is showcasing the nations top three teams: NESCAC rivals Middlebury College, Amherst College and Williams College. The Apple Raceberry Jam/Finish Lynx Division III Women’s Cross Country Poll has Middlebury College (1st), Amherst College (2nd), and Williams College (4th) as four of the top teams in the nation. The online poll at the ECAC website has Middlebury as the favorite, followed closely behind by Williams. The women’s team is looking to upset NESCAC Champion Middlebury Panthers.

On the men’s side, the Cardinals are looking to upset the NESCAC Champion Tufts Jumbos. The men are looking to seasoned veterans Owen Kiely ’06, Bryan Bissell ’04 and Weston Fuhrman ’05 to lead them to a top finish.
