The Cardinals took their first flight test on Monday and soared over the competition. The men’s tennis team knocked off Bentley, 5-1, in Middletown for their first win of the season.
Max Kates ’06, the Cardinals ace, started the afternoon off in good fashion, winning a tough three-set game with his Bentley foe. Tallen Todorovich ’07 followed in the second spot, winning his match in three as well. Mike Frank ’08, in the five-hole, won his match, steamrolling his opponent 6-1, 6-0. Max Schenkein ’08, after losing the first set 6-2, roared back with a pair of 6-4 set wins to take his sixth seed match.
Pauri Pandian ’08 suffered the only loss for the Cardinals in the third spot, dropping it in two sets.
In the doubles matches, Todorovich and Jaafar Rizvi ’09 fell in the top match, 8-4, but after that it was all good news for the Cardinals. Kates and Quinn Olbrich ’09 rolled 8-5 in the second spot and Paul Gerdes ’09 and Alejandro Alvarado ’09 followed with an impressive 8-3 win.
Yesterday, after press time, the Cardinals matched up at Springfield College. Next Tuesday, they will welcome the US Coast Guard Academy in their third match of the season.
