Wesleyan’s men’s and women’s track teams opened their seasons at the Trinity Invitational on Saturday, with several individuals giving strong performances despite the lack of team scoring at the meet.
Owen Kiely ’06 scored the lone first place finish for the Cardinals, winning the 3,000-meter Steeplechase by more than 15 seconds (9:35) while competing with 14 other runners. Kiely was consistently the number two man on this year’s cross-country and indoor track squads, often times having to step up for the injured captain Wes Fuhrman ’05 who should be near full strength soon.
The Cardinals had a pair of second place finishers in the 5,000-meter race, as Jeremy Solomon ’05 ran 15:16 for the men and Captain Courtney Quirin ’05 finished in 18:06 for the women. Dave Tutor ’06 notched a second place finish in the javelin throw and Sam Grover ’08 triple-jumped 43′ 5 1/4“ to land in second place.
Max Piana ’05 finished third with a 41′ 4 1/2” triple jump, Alex Battaglino ’07 ran 32:53 to place third in the 10,000-meter race, and Penelope Essoyan ’07 long-jumped 14′ 7 1/4“, third best in the event.
The next meet for the Cardinals is the Elmer Swanson Invitational Saturday at home.
