Although you might not always see it, Wesleyan is made up of many kinds of people who think very differently from each other—on all issues, including Congress’s recent efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. As a defender of the Constitution, I fully support the First Amendment right to assembly, and although I wholeheartedly disagree with their message, I support the students who participated in the Planned Parenthood Rally last Saturday. However, I am deeply troubled by the lack of recognition of alternative points-of-view, namely from the WSA.
On Saturday, Feb. 26, the WSA sent an all campus email encouraging students to “help save federal funding for women’s health.” This email clearly asserted a position on an issue that has nothing to do with the purpose of the WSA, nor is it a statement that is in accordance with their website, which states that they represent “the entire student body.”
It is not the role of the WSA to encourage students to endorse any political issue, particularly one occurring at the federal level. The WSA exists to represent “the interests of Wesleyan students in its dealings with college faculty, staff and administration” and provide financial support for student activities. I respectfully request that in the future the WSA keep to its job description.
