Regarding Will Boyd’s Wespeak Fix the CRC!

Many thanks to Mr. Boyd’s wespeak Fix the CRC! for providing the perfect opportunity to promote just a few of the many services the Career Center offers. The CRC offers comprehensive interest assessment, career exploration, and job and internship search resources for students and alumni pursuing careers, and advising regarding graduate and professional education beyond the Bachelor of Arts degree for those seeking additional education. Each year we offer over 150 programs and workshops, host more than 100 alumni and parent experts as speakers and presenters on campus, and connect students with organizations, companies and graduate programs recruiting Wesleyan students across all industries. In addition, we partner with Wesleyan faculty to support Wesleyan students’ applications to professional and graduate programs by providing a Credential Service where we house letters of recommendation for students and graduates.

To address Mr. Boyd’s concerns regarding advising for science graduate programs and access to the GRE, he is correct that we strongly encourage students to consult Wesleyan faculty for guidance about field specific programs and opportunities to continue their line of research in the context of an advanced degree. What I and my colleagues offer is practical help regarding timing of applications, strategies for approaching potential recommenders, identifying alumni who could serve as mentors and networking contacts, and answering the most important question—what are you going to do with that degree?

As for the GRE, and the MCAT for that matter, neither standardized test is offered on campus as they are both computer-based and are available only at contracted test administration sites. The LSAT is still a pencil and paper exam; Wesleyan is a testing site. For the GRE, the closest center is in Glastonbury, CT, about a 20 minute drive from campus and offers administrations by appointment.

And, Mr. Boyd is correct; the Career Center does not offer shuttle service to the testing site

The CRC is located in Butterfield A and is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday – 8:30 am – 5 pm, and Tuesday 8:30 am – 8 pm.
